MEPS gave their stamp of approval to new legislation recognising professional qualifications across Europe on May 11.

The European Parliament vote was the last hurdle for the directive which will become law in the next few weeks. It sets up a system granting automatic recognition to lawyers, architects, accountants, engineers, pharmacists and nurses who want to work in another EU country.

Professional organisations will be given a say in any future changes. The directive simplifies the system and cuts down on red tape by limiting the prior check on qualifications to professions which could affect public health or safety.

The European Commission and the Council of Ministers have already agreed to the law which defines the liberal professions and sets the standards for member states to recognise qualifications from outside the EU.

The European Parliament gave its final approval on 11 May 2005 to a new Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications.
