The European Parliament is consulted before the Council of the European Union establishes police cooperation agreements with third countries. The rules to reform the Europol negotiated in 2015 increase the relevance of the parliament in approving international police cooperation agreements.The European Parliament's plenary session backed on 12 April 2016 a strategic cooperation agreement between the European Police Office (Europol) and Brazil to crack down on organised crime and terrorism. Europol considered Brazil to be increasingly relevant in the fight against organised crime, including illegal immigration and trafficking in human beings. |
