TWO MEPs go on trial next week charged with possessing cannabis.

Marco Cappato and Chris Davies were arrested after taking part in a protest campaigning for a change in the UK laws which prohibit the sale and use of the drug.

Both men deny the charges.

The Italian Radical and his Liberal Democrat counterpart, who have been on unconditional bail, will appear for trial at Manchester Crown Court on Monday (28 October).

Davies was arrested last December after allegedly carrying a piece of cannabis stuck to the back of a postage stamp during a march on a police station. Cappato was arrested a few days later after turning up at a magistrates' court to support Davies, allegedly carrying a small amount of the drug.

Davies said he hoped the trial would bring about a public debate on cannabis laws in the UK.
