MEPS have called for an EU-wide crackdown on domestic violence.

The Parliament's women's rights committee want member states to give victims of abuse the right to evict a violent spouse or partner from the home.

Members also called for educational programmes on the issue to be implemented in schools and for the European Commission to launch a European Year of Action against Violence. Research shows that one in five women suffer violence at the hands of their spouse or partner. An estimated 500,000 people a year, most of them women and children, are victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation in the EU.
