Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne welcomed on 4 December 2001 the call for action launched by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) at its conference in Brussels. He emphasised his intention to take action at EU level on policy issues related to preventing and managing the bone-fragility disease which notably affects fast rising numbers of post-menopause women. One in three women and one in eight men over the age of 50 are affected by an enhanced bone fragility and an increased fracture risk. The European Commission will shortly start a formal review of the follow-up given by national governments to recommendations made at EU-level in 1998 for preventing and managing osteoporosis. According to an IOF report presented at the conference, such follow-up has been largely insufficient in most EU countries. |
