On 9 April 2001 the first Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the European Union and the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia was signed in Luxembourg. An Interim Agreement covering trade and trade-related matters between the Parties was also signed. This is an event of major political, symbolic, economic and practical significance which marks an important step in the process of the establishment of ever closer relations with the countries of the Western Balkans. It is a fundamental element of a multi-faceted EU strategy designed to favour a progressive process of integration of the countries of the Western Balkans into the EU. |
