At least 45 people were killed when the roof of a supermarket collapsed in the Latvian capital Riga on 22 November 2013.

On behalf of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso expressed his sadness and offered his condolences to the President and the people of Latvia.

Latvia's PM Valdis Dombrovskis announced his resignation on the 27 November 2013, and thereby the fall of his government, over the deadly collapse of the supermarket.
