Memo: Customs: Commissioner Šemeta welcomes EP vote on Intellectual Property Rights Regulation

Commissioner Šemeta has welcomed the 11 June 2013 vote from the European Parliament on new Regulation on the customs enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), noting it is important to give inventors the certainty that the fruits of their creations will be protected.

The new regulation takes account of developments such as the increasing importance of IPR for the EU economy, the explosion of postal traffic resulting from internet sales, practical problems in the implementation of the present regulation, fundamental procedural rights or the detention of generic medicines in transit through the EU on their way to third countries.
