Memo: : Commission proposes changes to facility providing financial assistance for Member States’ balances of payments

On 7.3.01, the European Commission unveiled a proposal for a Regulation on the medium-term financial assistance which can be granted by the European Community to Member States experiencing difficulties in their balance of payments on current or capital account. The Regulation, which will eventually replace the current Regulation (EEC) No 1969/88, will incorporate the changes made necessary by the introduction of the single currency and will constitute an appropriate financial instrument for dealing with balance-of-payment problems in an enlarged Community.
