The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his first visit to Brussels since taking office on 2 October 2024, in an attempt to reset bilateral relations following a tense period comprising the UK's withdrawal from the EU (also known as Brexit). There were calls for closer cooperation on defence and security, including energy security, as well as on climate change, irregular migration, and on delivering economic growth.
Mr Starmer held talks with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. A sticking point of these conversations was a proposed youth mobility scheme, which was put forward by the EU and resisted by the UK's authorities.
