Further information: Emmanuel Macron was elected as the French President after winning the second round of the presidential election on 7 May 2017. The inauguration was held on 14 May 2017. During the electoral campaign, Mr Macron was widely seen to be strongly in favour of the European Union and of further political and economic integration between member states. The outcome of his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the 15 May 2107 further showed his pro-EU stance. France's President Emmanuel Macron met with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk in Paris on 17 May 2017. This was the first formal meeting between the new French President and the European Council President. The two men held a private dinner, which was seen as a sign of President Macron's determination to shore up European unity during his presidential term. |
