Media groups resist Brussels proposals

Leading European news organisations have begun a fight to change European Union proposals they say risk placing media groups under the thumb of financial regulators. EU officials and regulators say the news organisations' concerns are premature. At issue is the proposed Market Abuse Directive which is expected to obtain final agreement by the end of October 2002.
