Matteo Renzi announced on the 4 December 2016 that he would resign as Prime Minister of Italy following a heavy defeat in a referendum held on that day to support constitutional reforms he had proposed.

Italian voters rejected the reforms by 60% to 40%.

Commentators suggested that the result would lead to a further period of uncertainty in Italian politics, give a boost to the populist Five Star Movement (M5S), and put further pressure on Italian banks and the wider economy in Italy.

While not inevitable, an early general election might take place before the next planned one in spring 2018.

Eurogroup finance ministers on 5 December 2016 pointed out that the referendum result did not mean a new crisis for the bloc, following increased concerns on the wider impact of this outcome.

Mr Renzi formally resigned in the evening of the 7 December 2016 following the adoption of the 2017 Italian budget earlier in the day by the upper house of the Italian parliament.
