Introduction: Illegal immigration, terrorism, cross-border crime such as human trafficking but also illegal arms trade and drugs transfers, and, last but not least cyber attacks. These are major threats, risks or challenges to our security today, not an invasion of tank armies, naval flottilla’s or massive aerial bombardments. These security challenges often originate from instable areas or conflict zones such as we witness today in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Thus, external and internal security can no longer be treated in isolation from each other. |
