Gas discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean held out the prospect of significant benefits for the countries concerned, notably Cyprus, Israel, and Lebanon, as well as the Palestinian territories. However, a number of delimitation disputes could discourage international companies from bidding to participate in exploration and development of offshore gas fields. International law provides a number of precedents and tools for addressing such disputes.
