Date: 21/05/1998 Everyone agrees that if the central and eastern European countries' accession to the EU is to go ahead smoothly, both sides must make their intentions very clear, scrupulously avoiding diplomatic double-talk and resisting the temptation to hide behind communautaire jargon. The perils of any other approach were illustrated last week, when Single Market Commissioner Mario Monti paid a goodwill visit to Slovenia. When a journalist asked Slovenian Minister for Europe Igor Bavcar what he thought of Monti's 'roadmap' - a step-by-step guide for eastern European candidates on how to adopt EU single market legislation - the minister replied, after a pause, that he knew nothing about the Commissioner's itinerary. |
