This report considers a pair of draft Directives, known as the 'nuclear package', which would harmonise the way EU Member States ensure the safety of nuclear installations and manage spent fuel and radioactive waste. The report includes contributions from Government Ministers in the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the UK Atomic Energy Authority, EURATOM, the Health and Safety Executive and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, British Nuclear Fuels, Nirex, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, as well as from government officials representing Finland, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Lithuania and Romania. Chapter 7 considers past and present practice regarding nuclear waste management in the United Kingdom. |
