Date: 13/02/1997 Who was that man standing with the other ordinary punters on a crowded Gare du Nord station in Paris the other morning? Alone and wearing a leather jacket, woolly gloves and a British-style tweed cap, it could have been almost anybody. The weekend holdall, the briefcase and the shopping bag gave nothing away. And yet behind that Jacques Moyen exterior, something seemed familiar. All became clear as he stepped into a first-class carriage of a Brussels-bound train. Some gold lettering on the briefcase glittered for a moment in the morning light: 'Round Table for a Single Currency', it said. Welcome aboard Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy. Love the headgear. |
