Spain, currently the largest net recipient of European Union aid, is anxious that the amount of aid it is due to lose due to the accession of ten new Member States does not end suddenly, but is withdrawn gradually. The matter was discussed at a tripartite meeting on 13 September 2004 in Madrid between French President Jacques Chirac, German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Spanish President José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
