The Economist asks would you choose the United Kingdom if asked to name the European country with the most turbulent future. Britain’s place in the world is less certain than it has been for decades. In May 2014 its voters are likely to send to the European Parliament a group from the UK Independence Party, which loathes Brussels. Then, in September 2014, Scotland will vote on independence. In 2015 there will be a general election. And by the end of 2017 — possibly earlier — there is due to be a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union. |
