Summary: Reports, analyses and information related to the presidential election in Lithuania held in May 2019. Further information: Lithuanian presidential election were held on 12 May 2019. The President is elected by absolute majority vote to serve up to two five-year terms. If no candidate wins an absolute majority of the votes with at least 50%, or receives votes equal to at least one third of all registered votes, the election goes to a second round between the top two candidates. The president has the power to veto laws, set foreign and defence policy, and is involved in appointing judges, the chief prosecutor and the central bank chief. Nine candidates competed for the country's presidency currently held by Dalia Grybauskaite, who cannot stand for re-election after completing her two five-year terms. The voter turnout tailed at 56,89%. Centre-left Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said he planned to step down as Prime Minister in July, after he was eliminated from the run-off having come in third place (19,70%). The former economist Gitanas Nauseda won won the election in the run-off, held on 26 May, with 65,86%, while his opponent the conservative ex-finance minister Ingrida Simonyte stood at 32,86%. |
