On 29 November 2016, the European Council published a letter addressed to the UK parliamentarians on the status of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens living and working in Europe, in reply to a previous letter from the UK Parliament.

In this letter, the European Council pointed out that, while the UK is still officially a member of the European Union, the status of the citizens doesn't change and that their future situtation will depend on the negotiations between the two, which will begin with the initiative of the UK.
