Summary: The European Parliament's Constitutional Affairs put forward a report proposing a redistribution of seats in the chamber following the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union. The initative was voted by the committee on 23 January 2018 EP's plenary session on 7 February. The proposed creation of an pan-European electoral constituency to elect a number of MEPs was rejected by the plenary session. Further information: The proposal reduces the Parliament's size from 751 to 705 elected representatives and places 46 of the 73 UK seats in a reserve after Brexit. Some of these could at a later stage be reallocated to new countries joining the European Union or preserved to keep the institution smaller. The remaining 27 British seats would be redistributed among slightly under-represented 14 EU countries, to even out existing inequalities in their representation in the House. |
