Book abstract:

This book addresses the important issue of equality between men and women. Differences in salaries, the difficulty in gaining promotion in certain traditionally male dominated professions and the quality of employment have been the subject of many governmental reports denouncing inequalities based on gender. The present study brings together several contributions by experts in the subject who participated in a seminar organised by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) on 17-18.6.99 in Luxembourg entitled 'The equality of treatment between men and women in relation to Community law and the European Convention of Human Rights'. The seven essays presented here look at the question from many different dimensions and consider the European Social Charter, retirement, the work of the Council of Europe, legislation and judgements by the European Court of Justice.

In the framework of the European Union, the starting point for equality between the sexes has been the principle of equal pay for work of equal value. This volume assesses how much progress has been made in terms of legislation and case law since the institutionalisation of this principle and raises questions on how best to effectively continue the struggle against unequal treatment, whether this be in the working environment or in family life.
The book is aimed at politicians, senior administrators and civil servants. The text is in French.
