Austria voted for the former Green leader Alexander van der Bellen to be the country's next president in the second round of the 2016 Presidential elections on the 22 May 2016, in what was one of the tightest presidential election races seen in Austria. The result was only made clear a day later after postal votes had been counted. On the 8 June 2016 Austria's far-right Freedom Party filed a legal challenge to the presidential vote in May, which they lost only a marginal 31,000 votes. |
