Launch of the first Irish Discards Atlas

The first Irish Discards Atlas was launched on 8 November 2011. It was produced by the Marine Institute and Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and compiled with the support of Ireland's fishing industry.

The Atlas was released to inform the ongoing discard debate being develop on a EU level, to identify where action needs to be taken and to inform on the appropriate measures. It provides information on discarding patterns by species and area by the various Irish demersal fleets. A number of potential technical measures to reduce discards are shown, as well as two case studies showing the potential impact technical measures have on landings and discards.
