The EU has been impotent facing the conflict in Sudan, exemplified by the humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur. The increasing pressure to "do something" reached the offices of the European foreign ministers four years ago and since then, as of both unilateral and European level, different (though failed) initiatives have been developed. In what relates to the ESDP, for example, the EU put itself in cooperation with NATO, the African Union mission in Darfur and the AMIS II operation, but was soon overwhelmed by the dimensions of the conflict. This failure has forced the European Union to occupy a leading place in this conflict impossible to disentangle from the Sudan conflict with Chad through the EUFOR Chad / RCA operation |
