In the European context the presence of the local autonomy is certainly not news to anybody. Even before the launch of the European integration process, the existence of the local entities was a constant in the institutional architecture of many States. Such States were endowed with an autonomy constituted by a nucleus of competences which were already one of the primordial pillars of the European Democratic System. These are entities whose legitimacy comes from its proximity to citizens. However, over recent decades the content of that autonomy has been extended gradually, as a reflex of the changes that have arisen in the European and international context. The case of the Disputation of Barcelona is taken as a reference deepening key activities, and institutional actors which characterize their work agenda at an European level. The ultimate proposal of this work is to reflect on the usefulness of the disputation activism regarding the involvement of local authorities in the European integration.
