Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock braved the hostile environment of a British television chat show earlier this week to explain once more why he was responsible neither for the Channel tunnel fire nor the French lorry drivers' strike.

He also revealed how you keep a Commissioner from getting ideas above his station.

For when Mr Kinnock is in danger of becoming a bit high and mighty during a marital tiff, Mrs Kinnock apparently refers to her husband as 'komissar'. On the other hand, when she fancies a spot of patronisation, she calls him 'commissionaire'.

Just a thought for the more combative of cabinet staff...
