A Russian court rejected on 22 September 2005 an appeal by the former head of Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, against his conviction for fraud and tax evasion, but reduced his sentence, from nine years to eight.

Mr Khodorkovsky had wanted to stand in a Moscow by-election on 4 December 2005, but his registration documents posted in September 2005 failed to reach the electoral commission.
