Kazakhstan's authorities announced on 3 January 2017 they had decided to lift visa requirements for citizens of the European Union, OECD countries and a number of other states wishing to be in the country for up to 30 days.

The decision was taken as the country's economy was battered by low oil prices and financial distress in the region. It was seen as a bid to boost investment and tourism.
