Date: 03/07/1997 Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy sparked a security nightmare at the G7 summit in Denver last week - by going shopping. Popping out to buy a few presents for the kids became a high-profile business as the Commissioner went in search of a G7 T-shirt or some such thing. Six 'heavies' strode with him, talking frantically into their sleeves every time he popped into a fancy goods store to check the prices. Two motorcycle outriders shadowed De Silguy as well, just in case. But who was that familiar figure keeping close by the Commissioner in the midst of the protection squad? None other than Giovanni Ravasio, director-general in charge of economic and monetary affairs. “I thought the Commissioner's left flank was a little exposed,” he explained afterwards. |
