A selection of experts answer a new question from Judy Dempsey each week on a European topic in the news.

In this feature the question was: Is Populism on the Run?

Marine Le Pen had done less well than expected in the first round of voting in the 2017 French Presidential Election on 23 April 2017 and many already saw Emmanuel Macron as France's next president. For some the right-wing populists have once again been put in their place after the defeats of Norbert Hofer in Austria in December 2016 and Geert Wilders in the Netherlands in March 2017. But were Europe's populist movements really on the wane now?
