Silvio Berlusconi's dominance of Italy's television industry is to be modestly curbed under a new government bill unveiled 12 October 2006 that aims to open up the sector to more competition.
The bill put forward by the centre-left government of Romano Prodi will require Mediaset, the Berlusconi family's powerful media company, and Rai, the state-run broadcaster, to transfer one channel each to digital terrestrial television within 15 months of the bill's approval by parliament.
