Mario Monti’s new government has 'taken the hatchet' to Italy’s pension system, with reforms proposed which earned the applause of investors but sparking protests from trade unions opposed to the most significant reforms included in the austerity package approved on the 4 December 2011.

The three main trade union federations have called nationwide strikes on the 12 December 2011 in the first protests against the technocratic government that was installed in November 2011 after the collapse of Silvio Berlusconi’s government.
