Italy's centre-right government gave no public sign, 28 October 2004, that it would withdraw Rocco Buttiglione as its candidate for the European Commission, in spite of pressure from socialists and liberals in the European Parliament. Nevertheless, the government prepared the ground for making some concessions in the dispute by describing it as a problem that involved not just Mr Buttiglione but other members of the incoming Commission. |
