In his first few days in office new Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta travelled to Berlin, Paris and Brussels for political talks with German, French and EU leaders. He met German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 30 April 2013 just hours after being confirmed as Prime Minister by the Italian Senate. Speaking ahead of the meeting, the two tried to downplay their divergences over European economic policy. Merkel repeated several times that 'solid public finances' and growth are two sides of the same coin. Mr Letta met French President Francois Hollande on the 1 May 2013 in Paris. Later he travelled onto Brussels for a two-day visit to speak with EU leaders, also with the economic and political situation at the centre of discussions. |
