Italian general election, September 2022

Further information:

On 21 July 2022, Italy's President Sergio Mattarella decided to dissolve the Parliament and call for an early election, following a crisis in government which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi. While Mr Draghi remained as caretaker prime minister, Italians were called to elect 400 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 200 members of the Senate on 25 September 2022.

Following the dissolution of Parliament, the electoral campaign started immediately. On 28 July, several right-wing parties agreed on the distribution of single-member districts between the allies and agreed on the candidate for the premiership, which was set to be proposed by the party that gains more votes. This coalition included the Lega, Fratelli d'Italia (FdI), Forza Italia, Unione di Centro, Coraggio Italia and Noi con l'Italia. A centre-left coalition led by the Partito Democratico was also formed, but faced a number of challenges. Following the break with its former coalition partner,  Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) decided to run on their own.

In a record-low voter turnout election, the right-wing coalition won a majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies and Senate. Fratelli d'Italia became the largest party in Parliament (26%), while Lega (8.8%) and Forza Italia (8.1%) suffered losses. The centre-left Partito Democratico was second (19%). Despite the electoral losses, Movimento 5 Stelle was third in this election (15.5%) Due to the amendments to the Italian electoral law and its mixed electoral system, the right-wing coalition was able to win a parliamentary absolute majority.
