According to EurActiv and several other media sources, Israel proposed to several European Union's member states the construction of a pipeline which would carry natural gas to the continent, aiming at reducing Europe's energy dependence from Russia. The proposal for the investment was made by Israel’s Energy Minister Silvan Shalom to energy ministers from Euro-Mediterranean countries and a formal presentation of the project to EU representatives in Brussels was set to be made in December 2014. Energy Minister for Cyprus Yiorgos Lakkotrypis confirmed on the 2 December 2014 that Energy Ministers of Greece, Cyprus and Israel would hold talks with the EU the following week to try to advance a plan for a pipeline linking gas discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean to Europe. |
