Abstract:

This timely work presents a detailed examination of the impact of Islam's presence in Europe. Five main areas are examined: the effect of the growth of Muslim communities on the demographics of Western Europe; the consequences of the marginalization of Muslims on domestic and international security; the impact of the issue of 'Islam in Europe' on the European Union's ongoing enlargement processes; the potential correlation between the increased visibility of Islam and the growth of far-right political parties in Europe; and the broader relationships between Islam and Europe, and Islam and the West.

The book is organised over seven chapters. Following an introduction, chapter two gives a review of the relevant literature and placement of the book within and beyond those contributions, together with a brief presentation of the methodology employed. The following three chapters include case studies of Islam in France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Chapter six comprises a case study of the broader Western European regional level with particular reference to the EU. The final chapter draws on the earlier ones to present some signposts as to the way forward for improved understanding of Islam in contemporary Western Europe.

The work will interest scholars, students, politicians engaged in this increasingly important area of European Studies.
