Date: 09/05/1996 When US customs officers seized a work by British artist Damien Hirst as it arrived in New York for an exhibition, they were apparently worried that the piece offended against the world-wide ban on UK beef. Hardly likely of course, as the 12 cut-up parts of two dead cows floating in tanks of formaldehyde were never in serious danger of reaching the dinner table. It is much more likely that the officers were concerned that - whether it was classified as art or food - Hirst's effort should be kept out of the country on grounds of possessing the daft title: “Some Comfort Gained from the Acceptance of Inherent Lives in Everything”. |
