Date: 08/05/02 By THE first concrete steps towards bringing the international police force in Bosnia under EU control will take place in the next few weeks with the deployment of a 'planning team' in Sarajevo, it was announced yesterday. Due to comprise of around 470 officers, the EU Police Mission (EUPM) will formally begin work on 1 January 2003. Foreign policy chief Javier Solana was due to discuss details of its launch with Lord Ashdown, the EU's new Special Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, in Brussels today (8 May). The EUPM will also be high on the agenda during the meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers in the Belgian capital next Monday (13 May). They will also examine what progress has been made to enable the Union to take over the peacekeeping duties currently led by NATO in Macedonia. EU hopes that it will be able to lead the 'Amber Fox' operation by September are being stymied by Greece's objections to plans giving the Union's new military structures access to NATO facilities. Solana has held talks with Athens in a bid to break the impasse, but EU officials are not hopeful of a quick breakthrough. |
