Feature published by EurActiv in September 2015 regarding the future of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and its implementation across the European Union. A Directive on these systems was adopted in 2010. The European Commission (EC) set its eyes on stepping up the use of ITS across the EU to improve road safety, reduce emissions and increase efficiency of road management. The next step would be, according to EurActiv, to add digital communication between vehicles and public authorities, as well as from vehicle to vehicle, to improve information sharing on traffic and vehicle conditions. Disagreement over data sharing rules kept shipping industry away from the excitment of the Commission. Although EU authorities have consistently considered this as a priority, no further policy on ITS had been put forward this far. However, the EC released a public consultation in September 2015 regarding the 'Provision of EU-wide multimodal travel information services under the ITS Directive 2010/40/EU' |
