On 15 December 2006, the EU-lead Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) came to an end having completed all the tasks assigned to it. This innovative civilian crisis-management mission has been more successful than anticipated at the outset. But most importantly, after 30 years of continuous armed conflict which cost more than 15 000 lives, displaced tens of thousands more and with economic and political implications felt by the country as a whole, peace and stability have now been firmly restored in the Indonesian province of Aceh. This achievement has, to a great extent, also allowed for post-tsunami reconstruction to continue unhindered.
