Background:

The gender gap in pensions is mainly the result of differences in the labour market and of a gender imbalance that exists in relation to careers and family life: a higher proportion of women working part-time, lower hourly wages, and women with fewer years in employment due to caring responsibilities.

The European Parliament's plenary session adopted on 14 June 2017 an initiative calling for a strategy to end and prevent the gender pension gap.

The document urged stakeholders to tackle gender inequality in employment and pay in order to prevent pension gaps.
