Book abstract:
This book focuses on the impact of European policies on individual businesses and industry as a whole. It provides an insight into the most important policy areas for business and industry, such as competition, research policy, environment and trans-European networks. Written by experienced practitioners who are working in the relevant policy areas each day, the authors, from five different Member States - Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium - produce an international approach. Three fundamental questions are dealt with in this book: Does the EU have an industrial policy? What does it look like? and How does it affect companies? The first chapter gives a definition of what the authors consider to be the industrial policy of the European Union. In the following sections, they analyse different definitions of industrial policy from an economic point of view and look at its different orientations. These economic concepts and findings are then applied to the Amsterdam Treaty, thus leading to the definition of the industrial policy of the EU. In the third section of the book they look at how the different policy instruments interact and sometimes conflict and a conclusion follows with a look to what the future might hold. This is a well-structured book that will appeal to all those interested in, and affected by, industrial policy, for example, students, business people, interest groups and policy makers. It will fit well within courses of European studies, international business and international political economy. Michael Darmer is Industry and Trade Counsellor at the Danish Permanent Representation to the European Union and Laurens Kuyper is Industry and Trade Counsellor at The Netherlands Permanent Representation to the European Union.
