DEVELOPMENT chief Poul Nielson has signed a €40 million aid deal for India's health service during his current visit to the country (28 January - 2 February).

The Danish commissioner said that supporting health and education projects in India's 'poorest but most reform-minded' regions would be key priorities in the Union's strategy for development cooperation with New Delhi. That five-year plan is being finalised.

Nielson's visit coincided with the first anniversary of the Gujarat earthquake, which left 35,000 dead. The EU has allocated €93.8 in humanitarian aid for its survivors, €13 million of which was spent last year.
