Following the crash of the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, apparently shot down over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014, several leaders across Europe urged Russian authorities to push for an independent investigation of the tragedy. Russian president later pledged 'full cooperation' with the investigation into the crash. On 21 July, a separatist leader of the rebels fighting in eastern Ukraine handed over the flight recorders from the airliner. On the same day, the UN Security Council condemned in a resolution the shooting down of the flight. Commentators doubted that Russia would cede ground in the regional conflict and some called on the European Union to impose tougher sanctions against the country. |
