Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Greek commissioner-designate for migration and home affairs, appeared before the European Parliament's Civil Liberties and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) on 30 September 2014.

Mr Avramopoulos stated that the best way to combat illegal migration was to set up a regular immigration framework and not a 'Fortress Europe'. He also defended that EU embassies should take asylum requests.
