To absorb newcomers peacefully, Europe must insist they respect values such as tolerance and sexual equality.

However in a separate article (see LSE EuroppBlog related url), Anne Jenichen wrote that sexual assaults, theft and violence occurred in several European cities on New Year’s Eve, most notably in Cologne. She discusses the debate that ensued following the incidents, criticising the focus on the race of the perpetrators in much of the subsequent discourse. She argues that restricting immigration won’t solve the problem of sexual assault, which is a global issue with a strong incidence in western Europe.

Separately, the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency January 2016 called for action to combat the violence against women that the Agency’s research had shown was prevalent across all ages and walks of life throughout the EU.

Governments and aid agencies were failing to provide even basic protections to women refugees traveling from Syria and Iraq. New research conducted by Amnesty International showed that women and girl refugees faced violence, assault, exploitation and sexual harassment at every stage of their journey, including on European soil.
